Des, your story doesn’t surprise me, sadly. A lot of people aren’t familiar with the full benefits that can come from doing this type of marketing, and just brush it off as you experienced.

From what I’ve seen, it’s only getting more effective and I now recommend Places above anything else for local SEO work, before pushing on other areas. I think more and more businesses will be getting on board, but if you can get on sooner, you can get some quality traffic earlier on, build up enough business to pour more money into marketing and grow further.

Absolutely right. Your post reminds me that, some time last year as I recall, I tried to help a local coffee shop owner understand this. I wasn’t actually touting for work, just felt sorry for him that he was working so hard but his cafe at the local shopping mall could not be found on a local search. He gave me the brushoff and went back to being busy and no doubt fretting. The pity of it for him was that none of the other coffee shops in the area were doing anything either so he could have had a dream run.

Excellent article! I agree with in your assumption that Google actually gives PageRank to sites based on the links they have going out. If you have a blog with no outbound links it either appears unnatural to search engines or perceived as a poorly written blog that doesn’t have the potential to attract an audience. If your blog was well written then you should have a few comments from time to time. However, I don’t think it is best to leave comments in a blog as dofollow. You can’t prevent others form linking to you but linking out to a site you are not 100% sure you can trust could blow up in your face.

I am curious if a site can be built with enough pages of quality content that it wouldn’t need any outbound links to place on the first page of search results. According to the PageRank formula each page has a PR value of 0.15. Even if the dampening factor eliminated the entire other 0.85 adding a new page to your site will increase your sites PageRank more then the average link.

Alas, I found one bug with my code. I was wondering why my wonderful page wasn’t getting hits. It’s because I had put “\.php$” instead of “^/(.*)$”, so it was redirecting from the new page back to itself infinitely. It’s now fixed.
