As most everyone has noticed by this point, Google Instant is now live. Searches provide results real-time, making the things you’re searching for appear more quickly, and in some cases, allowing searchers to find other results they may not otherwise have discovered. There is a lot of speculation out there on how this will affect SEO.

Does this mean SEO is dead? Only if you stick to old SEO techniques. True SEOs adjust with the times, since it’s a changing method, a changing technology. If you don’t adapt and evolve your techniques with the changes the search engines provide, your SEO methods will eventually become extinct.

This does mean there’s a change coming for SEO, although even Google’s Matt Cutts admits it’s a gradual one that will happen over time, not one that will occur overnight.

Google Instant shows results as you type. I’ve seen how some of the predicted text results show before you actually complete your search. I think this will affect SEO and what needs to be done to retain traffic through people who use Google. Since many people may stop using the “Search” button, perhaps it’s focusing further on this predictive text that is an adjustment that will be needed for SEOs.

It looks like Google Instant’s here to stay, so whether SEOs like it or not, we’ll all need to adjust to make necessary tweaks to our methods and approaches.

Nothing really new here, but sometimes it’s good to see what the big guns think about search engine optimization. Does Google approve of SEO? Do they have an opinion on it? Good? Bad?

Well, they most certainly have an opinion on it. In fact, they even offer solid advice to anyone interested on the Google SEO page (a page with guidelines, within the Webmaster Tools pages).

The fact is that Google is very aware of SEO, and will even encourage someone to do it, if they do it right. They have this to say on it:

“If you’re thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you’re considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.”

So Google does encourage doing SEO from the start of web design. And forgive me for the shameless plug, but yes, Tulsa Marketing Online does full SEO, and can do several levels of SEO included with our professional Tulsa web design. And the standard web design package includes on-site SEO. /End of shameless plug

If you do decide to get some SEO done for your site, there are some questions you should ask the company you are going to have do the optimization for you. Google themselves have an excellent list:

Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?

Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?

Do you offer any online marketing services or advice to complement your organic search business?

What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe?

How do you measure your success?

What’s your experience in my industry?

What’s your experience in my country/city?

What’s your experience developing international sites?

What are your most important SEO techniques?

How long have you been in business?

How can I expect to communicate with you? Will you share with me all the changes you make to my site, and provide detailed information about your recommendations and the reasoning behind them?

These are all great questions to ask someone talking about doing SEO for your site. You should also check to see if their tactics are white-hat or black-hat. Some companies use nefarious means to get improvements for site listings that will eventually cause more harm than help. Avoid these if possible.

Following Google’s tips and guidelines for any SEO work is good advice, and while they will not give away assistance on how to rank in their search engine, the best tips are to not break any of their webmaster guidelines, as this tends to cause penalties or even black-listing for the site involved. Any SEO work that keeps with these rules should be solid.

Google AdWords has a new tool they’re trying out. It’s called the AdWords Campaign Experiments (or ACE). It’s taking some testing that normally takes a while and making it faster.ACE allows users to make changes to their campaigns and run a separate instance of the campaigns with changes while still keeping the old campaign settings in place. It’s a simultaneous run, a split test.

It’s a great idea, I think – you can put in changes to your CPC to see how much more traffic you can get, you can restructure some ad groups to see if it helps as opposed to having all keywords in just one ad group, you can even just test out some new keywords to see what effect it will have.

The benefit of doing it as a split test means you don’t have to worry and wonder if the test you ran was effective because of the changes you made or because it was just during a peak seasonal flux in the market. You’ll see them running simultaneously so you’ll know they had the same exposure and impact from external fluctuations in the industry.

Google’s made a video to explain it:

You can find out all the details on Google’s official announcement page for AdWords Campaign Experiments.

One of Google’s new developments is the adding of another search element to their engine. Time. You can now search for a certain “freshness” of content in Google’s cache. These search options will produce results that display only pages that Google has seen updated in that frame of time. So if you only want to search for updates in the last day, only pages that have seen an update in the previous 24 hours that match with your keyword query will show.

The parameter is “tbs”, so you can add this to any search query and assign it a value to get these types of results. If you wanted to search the last week of results, add “&tbs=qdr:w” to your Google query URL (not in the actual keyword entry on the site). For example, if you’re looking for the latest info on movie reviews, you could do a query for the last 24 hours with a URL like this: “http://www.google.com/search?q=movie+reviews&tbs=qdr:d”

Now if you don’t want to mess around with URL editing, you can do it through the search engine itself by going to the “Advanced Features” from the main page, then opening up the “Date, usage rights, numeric range, and more” field below, then choosing what date range you would like there. Either way will work.

If you’d like to know more details about this, you can check out the excellent post by Brian Klais on Search Engine Land.

The news is out, Google is not a fan of Microsoft Windows. The main reason is security concerns, the vulnerability that is present with the hackability of the operating system. The biggest case of this was when Google’s Chinese operations were hacked through security holes in Windows. The threat from China hacking attacks has caused a bit more concern at the Google offices regarding security measures.

Now the operating systems that are allowed at Google are Apple’s OS X (or other Macintosh OS variants) and Linux. In order for any employees to install Windows permission must be granted from CIO level or above.

Details on this story can be found at the Financial Times.

Google’s making some changes to their standard search results, to include a left hand nav bar. This has made some people (including Business Insider) wonder if it’s to imitate what Bing already has in place – a side panel to have different links for images, videos, etc.

This change will affect how people view results in general, although Google’s advertising approach will likely not change heavily. We’ll have to see what the response is when they go fully live with these changes.

You can see Google’s words on the new SERPs here:

Google is continuously finding new ways to measure the quality of web sites, to choose which pages should be ranked higher. Relevance is still king for SEO, but one new element for search engine optimization (listed by Google directly) is web site speed.

With the speed the world works today, being able to access a site quickly is becoming more of a judgment factor for everyone, both web browsing individuals and the major search engines. Coming to a site that takes a while to load will reduce the chances that that visitor will continue to return. And for the search engines, worse performing web sites will get a hit in SEO value (not a big one, but it still affects rankings).

To find out how to improve your site speed there are a few options available.

YSlow – One that I personally like using is YSlow. Made by Yahoo, this free tool will give you information on which elements of the page are slowest, and gives recommendations on how to refine these issues.

Google Webmaster Tools – This is another free tool that will show all sorts of information on the site, including a graph showing average load time. Hopefully you’re already using this one.

There are several other ways to increase your web site’s loading speed. But realize that this is now something becoming more of a concern for ranking in the search engines.

So it’s April Fool’s Day. And Google always has something good. Apparently today they have announced that Google is no longer Google. Is is now Topeka. You can find out the details here, on their blog.

But all over the world, new things have arisen with Google. In the UK, a video was put up on YouTube about their latest translation advances. You can see the details of this amazing tool on the Google page here. A similar tool is available in Japan. Google Maps got an upgrade in Australia.

And I highly recommend going to Google Maps, use street view (drag the icon of the person onto a street), and you’ll see the latest advance in Google Maps technology. Quite nice.

Matt Cutts put out his latest update with Google in his blog. It appears that Google is now allowing bookmarking within the search engine itself. The way it’s done is to use stars next to each page you want to bookmark (much like Gmail operates with stars and emails). Then for any related searches, the bookmarks will show up above all the organic listings in a separate starred list.

And for editing on any of your bookmarks, there’s now a Google Bookmarks page that you can use to go and adjust your bookmarks as you see fit. Any text you add here will be used to match searches you put in, and will display that bookmark if you search for text within these fields.

How many people use this tool we’ll have to see, but it does have some advantages for organizational use within Google.

Google released a report card last week for product pages on search engines. This report card analyzed the levels of quality for SEO on the pages.

The short of it – Google gave themselves only one “excellent” rating, got three “satisfactory” ratings and eight “needs improvement”.

Google has stated they have taken action on these results or plan to. It’s somewhat funny to hear that the big search engine doesn’t always tweak their own pages properly for SEO purposes.

If you want more details on this, you can check out this article from the Los Angeles Times.

Today a court order goes into effect to force Microsoft to allow Windows users a choice in internet browsers. Previously, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was the default browser installation on Windows. As of today, that decision is no longer enforced, and users will have a choice to make that many were previously unaware they even had.

One possibility of this outcome is that Google Chrome may now see some increase in use. Google is doing a heavier push in the mainstream media, so everyday internet users will see the option to install Chrome. If a lot of them choose this, this will increase Google’s hold over the search engine market, and this will also effect many SEOs in their approach to optimization.

It appears the battle between Google and Microsoft (who’s joined forces with Yahoo) may have only now just begun. To check out more details on this story, see this article by HighPosition.net.

As everyone knows, typing in a domain doesn’t always give you the site you intended to hit. And typos like this happen all the time. There are people who have realized this and are making money from it.

There are two ways to make money from domain typos – either by using PPC and bidding on these typos (and then making money from the traffic you get on these usually cheap keywords), or by registering these domains and putting ads on the site for them.

The people that do the latter are called “typosquatters”. And there’s potentially a lot of money in the ads for higher traffic domain typos. Keep in mind that if the owners of the real domain notice you doing this, they can ask you to take the site down.

Whether or not typosquatting is ethical is a subjective question, but the fact is that some people make a ton of money from it, and so does Google. You can find out more about this and the figures involved in this article from Sideways News.

I got an email from Microsoft adCenter promoting the new alliance between Yahoo and Microsoft. They’re calling it “Search Alliance“. The aim is to have their online paid advertising fully unified before the 2010 holiday season, although they did say that they’ll wait until 2011 if they “determine this will be more effective”.

Microsoft bought out Yahoo, so now the primary tool behind both search engines will be Bing, and behind the pay per click (and other paid online advertisements) will be adCenter. The Search Alliance has stated that each company will “continue to have differentiated consumer search experiences”. Not sure exactly how they’ll pull that off with the same search engine for both, but they may just mean the search interface.

The support will be broken apart, Yahoo supporting the bigger advertisers, and Microsoft will provide support to “self-service” advertisers. They are combining their platforms for the advertising audience, so ads put together under this new alliance will reach consumers using either search engine. The Search Alliance brags that advertisers of all sizes will now be able to have access to a combined audience of nearly 577 million worldwide searchers.

At any rate, this is pretty big news – Yahoo and MS pulling together to battle the mighty Google. I expect this may be an epic battle.

The stance Google’s taken on search engine optimization has always been a little hazy. However, they do acknowledge many elements of SEO as being important for a good web design (as implied by all the information given within the Google Webmaster Tools pages). But it appears they’re taking it a step further.

Google has begun a small project by showing how to improve SEO for some select pages within countries in northern Europe. They will then put up a post about each page describing their findings and what they recommend to improve listing positions.

This isn’t exactly offering SEO services for clients (like our own Tulsa SEO services), but it is showing that they acknowledge how important SEO is for improving results, and are even willing to help by giving some tips.

Mark Jackson has a good article detailing more on this in ClickZ.

Google Buzz is the latest update from Google. Went live yesterday, looks to be Google’s effort to break into the social media market. I personally tried it out a bit, it ties directly to Gmail.

It does do updates regularly, and appears to share the information with anyone who follows you. A lot of people have commented that it looks to be an imitation of Twitter. The nice thing is that you can connect to other sites, to reduce all the different social machines that need maintenance.

The default for me was to activate sharing with Picasa and Google Reader (I didn’t select either of these). The other options available are visible in the image above. The blurred domain is a site I set up on BlogSpot/Blogger through the same account. With Twitter, it will read your Tweets, but from what I can tell it only reads to Buzz, not vice versa.

Looks like Google’s still ironing out the kinks on this, I’m sure plenty of people will be giving feedback for it. For now I find it nice since I don’t have the mass of content that is dealt out on Twitter, and so far it appears to still stay within actual social connections (and hasn’t spread into the marketing machine yet). So every “buzz” I’ve gotten so far has been from a friend, making an actual comment on life instead of a business telling me how good their merchandise is.

I don’t know if it’s automatic for all Gmail users, but from the amount of people I’ve seen pop on with it, I’m guessing it is. It’s just another option underneath the Inbox, and it will show updates for some “buzz”es (but not all) within the Inbox. It appears it will post the updates for anything you have contributed to to your Inbox, with the little Buzz logo next to it.

We’ll see if it’s something that gets used a lot or not, should be able to tell within a few weeks how well it’ll work.

Google just upped their record from the 4th quarter of 2008 by 17%. So how much is that, exactly? Revenues in the 2008 4th quarter: $5.70 billion. And they’re only improving. Revenues in the 2009 4th quarter: $6.67 billion.

The fact that this is only for one fourth of the year blows my mind. If that stays consistent, then that’s in the neighborhood of $25 billion a year. They’re doing okay.

If you want to get more of the details on these numbers, check out this article from Greg Sterling at Search Engine Land.

It’s not always dead on accurate, but by using Google in the right way you can often figure out what your significant other is interested in. How? By using what’s known as “predictive text”. It’s the ability by Google (and Yahoo) to see what you’re typing in and try to predict what you might be looking for. By only entering a few words in, you can often glean a lot of very interesting information.

For example, you can type in “how can I get my girlfriend to” and then let Google roll, see what it comes up with. (Warning, even though it’s only text, it’s not all child-friendly content.) Replace “girlfriend” with “boyfriend”, “wife”, “husband”, etc. and you have a new research tool.

Mind you, in many cases these results may not match at all with your significant other’s thoughts and desires, but it can still be fun to explore. And for marketers, this is a gold mine. These are the hot buttons that are looked for to prompt action by many marketers, and Google is just giving it to you.

If you want to see more detail and screenshots of examples of these, check out Vanessa Fox’s excellent article on Search Engine Land.

As posted in article by PC World, even Google can make errors on occasion. In this case, some statistics for users of Google Business Center were sent to incorrect Business Center users. This included information such as how often the business had appeared in listings, how many times the business was clicked and follow-through clicks on the business site itself.

This error was found to have been by human mistake, not an error directly with any of Google’s systems. Google was on top of it and corrected it quickly. They published a written statement to acknowledge the error and that when they discovered it, said they paused all emails to Business Center users until they could determine the cause of the issue.

Apparently Google in Japan got a big penalty placed on them by Google themselves, taking their toolbar PageRank level from 9 to 5 (Search Engine Land posted an update about this on an earlier story they had). This is a huge sign – one, that Google takes bad actions by any site (even themselves) very seriously.

Only now has the penalty been removed, although the toolbar PageRank is only up to 8 (not 9). That’s almost a full year of penalization (11 months, to be precise).

The malady that Google Japan performed? They paid bloggers to review a new Google widget. This isn’t the first time Google instated a penalty on themselves – it does go to show that Google enforces their rules consistently, even against themselves.

It demonstrates that if you want to be sure to keep good rankings, you do have to follow Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

The news about Google’s real-time search has been out for a little while now, but many people are still wondering how this is affected by real-life situations. Well – Matt Cutts was gracious enough to show by example. He displays exactly how Google tracked a recent mild earthquake and how long it took to show results on Google.

It’s good to see that their real-time search update actually functions as intended, and I can see the potential for it to help in a variety of ways. Being the top search engine and a huge point where people check on things every day, getting your breaking news from Google (for info relevant to what you’re looking for) may get info to some people (who don’t check the news so often) faster. Whether or not Google should take this role is not something that’s universally agreed upon, but there are visible benefits.

Now I’m already an iPhone user, but I’ve heard plenty about Google’s Android. And while I’m not able to do a fair comparison, Danny Sullivan (SEO extraordinaire) is, and he did.

He does more of a businessman’s review, as to how each phone worked in an efficient manner (or not), and what his impressions were of each overall. Check it out if you’re trying to decide between the two.

Google’s made a little tweak to AdWords, so now you can put an ad that will show on cell phones that lists a business number. If the owner of the phone calls that number, that counts as the click that is paid for.

The benefit of this is that it’s a very quick hot lead for anyone who advertises on the mobile network. And it’s easy to do, since it defaults to all devices in AdWords, anyway. To make sure you’re listed, check to see that mobile devices are checked in your settings in the campaign settings in AdWords.

Also, to have your phone number listed, you can either have the business information synched up with your business account or enter it manually, both done inside of the AdWords campaign settings. Make sure whichever you do that you include your phone number.

Then to see the results, just choose the “Filters and Views” drop-down list and choose “Segment by”->”Click Type”. This will show which clicks were URL clicks, and which were calls, from either the Ad Group or Keywords tabs.

It’s just an addition Google’s made to AdWords, and sent out an announcement through email to Google advertisers. This could be a good change for people who use AdWords for markets that actively use their cell phones.

Most people view PageRank as that value from 0 to 10 that’s in your Google Toolbar, showing how much reputation your site has on the internet. There are some details that you should know if you really want to understand PageRank.

PageRank History

The PageRank algorithm actually outdates the Google search engine as we know it today. It is not named for the rank of web pages (as many may believe), but is named after Larry Page who developed the algorithm. PageRank was created before the founding of Google, but is still used today as a major element in how Google populates its search engine results pages.

How PageRank Works

The basic functionality of PageRank is often compared to water and the flow of it (also often termed “link juice”). Each web page has a certain amount of PageRank flowing into it, and begins with a set amount. The full algorithm of PageRank can be seen in the paper “The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine” written by Sergey Brin and Lawrence (Larry) Page at Stanford. It is listed as follows:

We assume page A has pages T1…Tn which point to it (i.e., are citations). The parameter d is a damping factor which can be set between 0 and 1. We usually set d to 0.85. There are more details about d in the next section. Also C(A) is defined as the number of links going out of page A. The PageRank of a page A is given as follows:

PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + … + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

Note that the PageRanks form a probability distribution over web pages, so the sum of all web pages’ PageRanks will be one.

Looking at this algorithm, the damping factor reduces initial PageRank to a value of 0.15 which is then adjusted based on the PageRank of pages pointing to it (backlinks).

PageRank Flow

Thinking back on the “flow” concept of PageRank, the way PR flows out of a page can be thought of like a container with holes in the bottom it. However many holes are in the container, the same total amount of water will flow out from it. And we can assume the holes are the same size, because the flow is the same from each. With an amount of 100, if we poke two holes in our container (two links going out from our page) we will have a flow of 50 from each hole. If we were to poke two more holes, then that flow is reduced to 25 from each. This is how PageRank flows out from web pages, through all the links that go to other pages (on the same site or a different site, it does not matter). It can be more easily seen in this image from one of the original PageRank papers:

When looking at this, you can see that the more links you have on a web page, the less PR each link contains.

PageRank Value

Looking at the PageRank value in the Google Toolbar, this value is not actually a value that corresponds real-time with what the true value of a page’s PR is. This is a value that’s updated about 5 times each year, and is only an approximation of true value of PageRank on a scale of 0 to 10. This value is often incorrect as it can be out of date. Google has never given the actual algorithm for this Toolbar PageRank, and the true value of PageRank for any given page is not known outside of Google.

PageRank Adjustments

Google added one change to the flow of PageRank in 2005, known as the “nofollow” option. This is an adjustment that can be added to any link (by adding the phrase rel=”nofollow”), meant to ignore all influence to PageRank. This was added to help fight spam, so that PageRank would not automatically flow to pages set in comments sections. The “nofollow” option in the water flowing analogy can be thought of as plugging one of the holes in the container – the same amount of value is now distributed evenly among all of the remaining open holes/links.

However, Matt Cutts from Google published a blog post in June of 2009 that revealed Google no longer redistributes PR to links that don’t have nofollow. According to Cutts, each nofollow link still absorbs the set amount of PageRank, it just does not distribute it to the link that it points to. This means a page that has a PR of 10 with 5 follow links and 5 nofollow links will only send each follow link a value of 1, not 2.

This has caused a large commotion (especially among the SEO community), since with this change it would appear that PageRank is being lost with nofollow links. Leslie Rohde has done an excellent investigation into the nofollow change, and according to him this change in algorithm has not truly affected PageRank flow.

PageRank and SEO

This information about PageRank should give a good idea of how the flow of PageRank happens from page to page. It flows to and from pages, independently of domain (either on-site or off-site, it still flows equally). How this fits with SEO is still a bit of a mystery as the full adjustment of search engine result pages in conjunction with PageRank is unknown outside of Google. However, it tends to be seen that two pages with equal SEO elements differing only by PageRank will always put the page with a higher PR first. In the eyes of Google, it appears that level of PageRank is equivalent with page quality, and Google always wants to rank quality pages higher. Keep in mind that this does not mean a page with a Toolbar PageRank of 2 cannot show higher in listings than a page with a Toolbar PageRank of 5, if the first page has better SEO.

Knowing this, it’s best to try building PageRank for site pages when doing SEO to help increase positions for targeted keywords, but do not neglect standard SEO practices to help the total improvement in ranking.

How to Increase PageRank

To increase PageRank, you can look at the image above to see how it works. To get more PR to a particular page, you simply need to have a link from a high-PR page. The fewer links on that page, the more PageRank your page will receive.

However, not all links pass value, even without a nofollow tag. Some pages Google will flag for lack of quality (such as link farms), and any links from these pages will not pass PageRank to the pages they are linking to. This means while getting links to your page will help, getting links from higher quality pages is always a better idea.

Also realize that purchasing high PR links does not go unnoticed by Google. If they detect that high PR links were purchased, the value of these links will often be dismissed and have no influence in PageRank on the page they are linking to.

All things considered, to build PageRank it’s best to get natural quality links from pages that have a good level of PR and not an overabundance of outbound links. Knowing how to do this well can make all the difference in doing good search engine optimization work.

Yes, Google will still show pages even if you have set them up to be blocked in your robots.txt file. Why exactly, you’re wondering, I’m sure.

Google is actually not crawling any of the URLs you have listed as blocked in your robots.txt file. What they are doing is displaying the page, just not showing your description meta tag or any information from inside that page. Matt Cutts gets into more detail about that here:

So to prevent Google from displaying your pages at all, you need to remove the page inside your Webmaster Tools or else use a robots meta tag with a noindex value in it for each page. Then your page will not show up in Google’s results at all.

You can get more details on this information from Quick Online Tips.

Just a quick post – try going to Google and hitting the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button without entering a query. You’ll see a big number pop up. Google’s waiting for the new year! I do wonder what will happen when that number reaches zero and you’re on the page.

Just a cool little easter egg.
